FRAMINGHAM —Welcoming Framingham will host a reception tonight, from 6 to 8, for a new photo exhibit at the Framingham Public Library, 49 Lexington St.

"Immigrants in New England: An Old American Tradition," features the work of photographer Mario Quiroz, who traveled through Massachusetts and shot 35 rolls of black and white film documenting immigrants who wanted to share their images and stories.

Quiroz's goal was to represent as many nationalities as possible, and the exhibit includes images of people at adult education schools in Framingham, on the street in Chinatown, at businesses in East Boston, and in an Islamic mosque in Roxbury, as well as photos taken in Jamaica Plain, Medford and Lawrence.

"Art can bring a positive light to an issue that is present in every aspect of all our lives," Quiroz said. "We're talking about friends, neighbors, business partners, schoolmates, and members of our religious organizations. The subjects of these pictures believe that through photography they can deliver a message about their virtues and talents."

The opening reception for the exhibit, which will remain at the library through the end of July, will include a samba and bossa nova performance by Brazilian musicians Lucia Regina and Luiz Silva, and a short panel discussion between Quiroz and one of his subjects, Angel Valdivia, who immigrated from Chile knowing no English and now runs a painting business in Framingham.

Born in San Salvador in1974, Quiroz lived and worked for many years around Washington, D.C. In 2009, he and his wife moved to Cambridge, where he continues to teach and exhibit.

The exhibit is organized by the Welcoming Framingham committee, and sponsored by Welcoming Massachusetts, which seeks to promote understanding between immigrants and community members, and to aid in the full integration of the state's immigrant population by fostering respect, cooperation and dialogue.
